Description	:	The Cedar Rapids residents were in a state of sadness on Monday afternoon, February 20th when they received the news of the death of M. Z. Barnhard who with his son Ed, were engaged in the operation of a corn sheller at the farm of Fred Wright. Barnhard who with his son Ed, were engaged in the operation of a corn sheller at the farm of Fred Wright. Without any warning he had been standing next to the sheller, walked towards a wagon, fell and was deceased. Dr. Burgess was called immediately, but could only confirm the fact of his death. He had been unable to do any hard physical labor due to an accident a few weeks earlier in which he had injured a foot, but had recovered sufficiently to again go about his work. His body was returned home and funeral arrangements were placed in the hands of C. W. Shaffer. --------newspaper article Melvin Barnhard was born at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, February 18, 1843, eldest son in a family of five children and had reached the age of 63 years and 9 days. Comrade Barnhard was mustered into the United States army February 9, 1862, joining Co. H of the 74th Ohio. After two years service he reenlisted for three years longer. He was mustered out at the close of the war. He leaves a splendid war record, showing his love for our country. He was with Sherman in his famous march to the sea, enduring the hardships common to soldier life in those days when it tried men's souls. November 23, 1865, near Bluffton, Ohio he was married to Martha Charlton. To this union were born ten children, five preceding their father in death. In 1877 Mr. Barnhard and family moved to the vicinity of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, pioneering in the development of the community. Following a short service at the house, the remains were taken to the Methodist Episcopal Church, escorted by Caddell Post #74, G.A.R., where services were conducted by Rev. J.S. Green, assisted by Rev. Frank Gray and Rev. Gladdening. Services were concluded at Sunset Hill Cemetery, where the G.A.R. took charge, led by acting commander Dennis Tracy, who conducted the ceremony and gave a tribute to their deceased comrade. Mr. Barnhard is survived by his wife, five children, (four of whom are John of Shenandoah, Iowa; Mrs. Hattie Patchin, Casper, Wyoming, Mrs. Olga Thompson, Shenandoah, Iowa and Edward of Albion, Nebraska) his aged father and a brother of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. -----newspaper obituary
