Description	:	Funeral services for Melvina I. Farnik, age 91 of Niobrara, will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the Presbyterian Church in Niobrara. Reverend Paulo de Tarso Ribeiro will officiate with burial in the L' Eau Qui Court Cemetery in Niobrara. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Brockhaus Funeral Home in Niobrara. Mrs. Farnik died Sunday, June 12, 2011 at Alpine Village in Verdigre. Melvina Ione Christiansen Farnik, born on July 14, 1919 at Verdigre Nebraska to Peter Hansen Christensen and Florence Theresa Diez. She grew up southwest of Verdel where she attended rural school and high school at Niobrara, Broken Bow and Lynch. She graduated in 1938 from Lynch. She moved to Rapid City SD, working as a waitress where she met her first husband, Joe Balaski, and married him 1944 to which one son, Larry Dean Balaski was born. He was killed in Germany 1945 while serving in WWII. After his death, she moved back to Niobrara to be with family and worked at the bank. She married Henry Farnik November 10, 1947 and to that union were born two sons, Kenneth and Galen Farnik. They farmed in the Pischelville area northwest of Verdigre until 1965; when they sold the farm and moved to Niobrara, purchasing the grocery store which she continued to work at until 1996 when she retired. In 1979, Henry Farnik passed away. However, she would be at the store every day until a stroke affected her vision in 2006. She was a very hospitable person, as well as being very community oriented, hosting Bible study in her home for years, was a member of the VFW auxiliary, active member of the Presbyterian Church where she served on session and the parish boards for several years. She loved playing cards, listening to old time music, and having company. She moved to Alpine Village Retirement Center in February 2008. She was preceded in death by husbands, her parents, and sisters, Dona Meserve Philips, Lila Finke Suhr, and Maxine Kulhanek James. She is survived by a son Larry Balaski and daughter in law, Mary of Norfolk, NE; and two sons from Niobrara, NE Kenneth Farnik and Galen Farnik and two grandsons, Joey Balaski of Pierce, NE and Perry Balaski of Anaheim, CA; great grandson, Kyle Balaski; great great grandson, Talon Balaski; and one sister JoAnn Harris of Palm Springs, California.
