Just after they had crossed the Mississippi into Iowa, August 30, 1859, a daughter was born to them whom they named Melvina Isabel. They settled on a homestead northeast of America City. Here Melvina Isabel grew up the eldest of twelve children. She was married February 5, 1878, to Charles Booth. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Booth. The family continued to reside in the America City neighborhood with the exception of eleven years spent in Wallace County, and a few years in Pottawatomie County near St. Clere. Since 1918, Mr. and Mrs. Booth resided two miles northeast of America City. After a year of failing health and five weeks illness from paralysis. Mrs. Booth passed away at her home at 4:50 p.m., March 19, 1931. She was a devoted wife and mother, a hard worker, a lover of flowers. She made many friends by her kind Christian spirit and helpful services. Her last days were marked by her talking much of her God in prayer. Besides her husband, Charles Booth of Soldier; her mother, Mrs. Nancy Jones of Corning; she is survived by eight children: Nellie, now Mrs. W. H. Walden of Manhattan; W. E. Booth of Alta Vista; Lizzie now Mrs. J. H. Massey of Manhattan; Mattie, now Mrs. J. A. Huntsman; of Soldier; Ella, now Mrs. A. R. Bangert of Manhattan; B. H. Booth of Corning; Henry T. Booth of Havensville; and Anna now Mrs. Wilson of Emmett. Two daughters are not living: Mrs. Dora Laughlin and Mrs. Myrtle Shafer. Three sisters and four brothers survive also: Mrs. P. A. McKee of Havensville; Mrs. Fred Gerit of Soldier; Mrs. Myrtle Morgan of Minneapolis, Kansas; Frank Jones of Corning; Jesse Jones of Soldier and Ed Jones of Blue Rapids, Kansas. There are sixteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Mayfield of Soldier, in the America City Church. Six nephews acted as pall bearers. Interment was in the America City Cemetery.
