Description	:	Menno J. Walter, age 84, formerly of Iroquois, died Thursday, February 25, 2010, at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. His funeral service was at 3 PM Monday, March 1, 2010, at Bethesda Church with Rev. Phil Plett officiating. Burial was in the Bethesda Church section of Ideal Cemetery with military rites by the Bensley-Rounds Post #280, Iroquois American Legion. Menno went to join the lord in his heavenly home on February 25, 2010, at the age of 84 years. Menno Joe Walter was born the fifth of eight children, on May 23, 1925, to Joe B. and Rebecca (Mandel) Walter on a farm near Carpenter, South Dakota. He attended Milford Country School all eight grades and attended two years at Doland High School before having to stay at home to help on the farm after his father's death in 1940. In 1941, Menno moved with his family to Huron. Menno was employed at Leighton Chevrolet until April 6, 1945, when he departed for service in the US Army during World War II. He served 14 months in Japan and received his honorable discharge on December 7, 1946. Upon returning home, Menno worked for Gold Medal Dairy and Fairmont Foods for 17 years. On April 27, 1947, Menno married Ruby Gross at Bethel Church at Yale. They resided in Huron until the spring of 1963, when they purchased a grocery store and Texaco station and moved their young family to Iroquois. They owned and operated Walter's Grocery for 34 years retiring in 1997. Over the many years, they also owned and operated Walter's Furniture, Phillips 66 Station, a laundromat and a carwash in Iroquois. Menno was a member of Bethesda Mennonite Brethren Church in Huron. Menno was always very active in the community he lived and owned businesses in. He was a member of the Huron Noon Lions Club, Huron VFW, Iroquois American Legion Post #280, Iroquois City Council, Iroquois Volunteer Fire Department, Iroquois Community Club and Iroquois Coffee Club. Menno was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. He enjoyed bowling and playing bingo his entire life. Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife of nearly 63 years, Ruby of Sioux Falls, and their five children, Rollin (Barbara) Walter of Iroquois, Marlin (Monica) Walter of Fort Collins, Colorado, Denise (Mack) Robertson of Ralston, Nebraska, Mavis Walter of Sioux Falls, and Kevin Walter of Roseville, Minnesota. Grandpa will be missed by nine grandchildren, Ryan, Reed, Aaron, Andrea, Keith (Jeny), Kyle, Kory, Emily and Lauren, and one great-grandchild, Skylar. Also grateful to have been part of his life are his two sisters, Vi (Don, who also died later on Thursday, February 25, 2010) Tschetter of Omaha, Nebraska and Barbara (Henry) Tschetter of Sioux Falls; two brothers, Jim (Lois) Walter of Papillion, Nebraska and Amos (Leona) Walter of Sun City, Arizona; one sister-in-law, Josephine Hofer of Huron; several nieces and nephews; and many friends in the Iroquois and Huron communities. Greeting him in Heaven will be his parents; two sisters, Alice Tschetter and Marie Walter; and one brother, Sam E. Walter.
