She died Tuesday July 13 1999 at her home. Mercedes Mulliken was born Dec 24 1909 in Dodge County near Nickerson. She lived all of her life in Dodge County, attending school in Nickerson.She graduated from Fremont High school also attending Lincoln School of Music (now a part of the University of Nebraska). She taught school near Nickerson. She married Alvin L. Christensen Feb 15, 1936. For many years they lived 1 1/2 miles north of 23rd Street on Yager Road. He died Feb 19, 1987. She was a member of First Congregational Church, UCC, PFC Extension Club, Daughters of the American Revolution (she was a direct descendant of one of the 8 minute men killed in the opening battle) and was a 4-H leader for many years. She received a Good Neighbor Award in 1990 by the Knights of Aksarben and the Omaha World Herald. She was a volunteer chairwoman for Meals on Wheels in Fremont retiring from this position at age 85. She received a national honor from the Church Women United as a valiant Woman. She had been a member of the former Rosedale Woman's Club and the former Floral Study Group. She was a former historian of Dodge County Historical Society and recently resigned as a guide of Louis May Museum after 30 years. She was also very active in the activities of Gifford Tower, where she was a resident. Survivors include five daughters, Valerie (Mrs. Thomas) Wollen of Elkhorn, Iris (Mrs. J L) Doksansky of Fremont, Rochelle (Mrs. Donald) Sherper of Elk River, Minn. Eileen Musbach of Greenville, Tenn, and Carol Reed of Minneapolis, a son Larry and wife Linda Christensen of Des Moines Iowa, two sisters Genevieve (Mrs. Harry) Whewell of Providence RI, and Adele Larson of Nickerson, a brother Alan (and wife Nellie Mulliken) of Nickerson, 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. The Rev. Lynn Martin will officiate Saturday's service. There is no public visitation. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the church and to May Museum.
