Description	:	On Aug. 1, 1914, he married Elda Edna Sprunger at the parsonage at New Concord, Ohio. The following three years, both Merl and Elda attended Muskingum College at New Concord, Ohio. Mrs. McDowell taught there the latter part of the third year. Later they came to the farm of his mother near Dalton, where their first four children were born. About that time, Mr. McDowell was given a call from the General Mission Board of the United Presbyterian church to become their overseer of the Mission farm at Frenchburg, Kentucky. The following three years, both Merl and Elda attended Muskingum College at New Concord, Ohio. Mrs. McDowell taught there the latter part of the third year. Later they came to the farm of his mother near Dalton, where their first four children were born. About that time, Mr. McDowell was given a call from the General Mission Board of the United Presbyterian church to become their overseer of the Mission farm at Frenchburg, Kentucky. On Feb. 22, 1924, the family moved to the Mission Farm at Frenchburg where he was both teacher and overseer of the farm. Another daughter and a son were born in Frenchburg. She passed away May 22, 1928, just a few days after the birth of their sixth child. After funeral services for Mrs. McDowell in Ohio, Mr. McDowell and family returned to Frenchburg. On July 30, 1929, he married Ruth Elizabeth Leet at West Chester, Iowa. She was a graduate of Monmouth College. They resided in Frenchburg, Kentucky and three daughters were born to them there. In 1938, they moved to her parent’s farm near West Chester, Iowa. He was a farmer and on the board of the Mid-Prairie School District. Click on all 5 photos to read captions.
