Saturday, August 21, 2021, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, with Doug McFarlane officiating. Visitation is for one hour before the service at the funeral home. Military Graveside Service by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Final Resting Place: Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa. Merl LaVern McFarlane was born on November 20, 1927, in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of George I. and Ruby (Evert) McFarlane. After attending school in Oelwein and Hazleton, Merl graduated from Oelwein High School in 1945. He was united in marriage to Lois Jean Melcher on June 13, 1954, at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Oelwein. Merl and Lois moved to Pueblo, Colorado in 1956 where they were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Linda. The family returned to Oelwein in 1957 where Gary, Marc, Julie and Lori joined the family. Merl served in the USAF from 1950-1952, stationed in San Antonio, TX, Pueblo, CO, and Ogden Utah. He was co-owner of the Service Center appliance store in Oelwein for 35 years. He served as Oelwein City Councilman from 1972-1976. He was also elected to the Fayette County Board of Supervisors and served there from 1985-1997. He was appointed by the governor to the Iowa Commission on Community Action Agencies in 1991, contributing to their work for 20 years, including several years as the committee leader. Merl was a member and lay minister for the Community of Christ Church, Oelwein branch, for many years, and later a member of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls branch of the church. Following the passing of Lois on September 3, 2015, he moved to Oelwein Central Manor apartments, where he enjoyed meeting new friends, going on drives, and jigsaw puzzles. In 2017, he moved to Meadow Lakes Assisted Living in Rochester, MN, to be near his daughter, Julie. There, he continued his impressive collection of completed jigsaw puzzles and enjoyed reading and watching sports on tv. He was a long-time fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls. Throughout his life, he enjoyed camping, hiking, canoeing, and most of all, a good road trip. His children will always remember the many family vacations taken all across the U.S. He continued driving trips into his later years, visiting relatives in Maryland, Oregon, Arizona and Colorado. Merl was a role model to his children and others for his patience, love of the outdoors, and service to others. Merl is survived by his 5 Children: Linda (Walter) Billings of Bel Air, Maryland, Gary (Joyce) McFarlane of Roseburg, Oregon, Marc McFarlane (Stephanie Mendoza) of Phoenix, Arizona, Julie (Jim) Cunningham of Rochester, Minnesota and Lori (John) Kielkopf of Hedrick, Iowa; 16 Grandchildren; 4 Great Grandchildren; Sister: Fran Ainlay of Mesa, Arizona; Sisters-in-law: Karen Secor of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Judy Melcher Schultz of Parkersburg, Iowa & Kay Johnson of Canyon City, Colorado and many Nieces & Nephews. Merl was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a daughter: Gale, in infancy, his brother: Evert McFarlane and his sister: Pearl Beckner.
