Mert was born May 7, 1927 on a farm in rural, Nordmore Township of Foster County, North Dakota, the son of John and Anna (Stene) Indergaard. He was raised and attended rural schools in Nordmore Township before attending Carrington High School and graduating in 1944. "Mert" Indergaard, 83, Minot, died Sunday, June 6, 2010 in a Minot Hospital. Mert was born May 7, 1927 on a farm in rural, Nordmore Township of Foster County, North Dakota, the son of John and Anna (Stene) Indergaard. He was raised and attended rural schools in Nordmore Township before attending Carrington High School and graduating in 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May of 1945 and served in the Pacific Theatre and Shanghaii, China during World War II. Upon receiving his honorable discharge in July of 1946, he returned to the Carrington area, where he was employed with J.C. Penney Company from 1947-1949. Mert was united in marriage to Anna L. Huber on October 9, 1949 at Dodge, North Dakota. In 1949, he began employment with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with the Civil Works Division at Riverdale, ND, doing work on the Garrison Dam. In 1959, he was transferred from Riverdale to the Corps' Military Works Division at the Minot Air Force Base, where he was employed in an administrative capacity. In 1961, he was transferred to the Air Force - Air Defense Command Unit at the Base, and was employed by the Civil Engineering Squadron with the installation of the Minuteman Missile Defense systems from 1962-64. After completion of the missile installation, he was employed as Budget Officer, Strategic Air Command, and with the Comptroller Division at the Minot Air Force Base. In 1987, Mert retired as the Civilian Personnel Officer at the Base, with a federal career of over 39 years. Mert was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church. He was a very active member of NARFE (National Active & Retired Federal Employees Association) and held a number of positions on the State and National Level with the organization. His loving family includes: wife of over sixty years, Anna; children; Lyle (Papo) Indergaard, Valdosta, GA, Dale (Louisa) Indergaard, Cumming, GA, and Coreen (Perry) Kozlowski, Fargo, ND; Grandchildren: Anna Marie Kozlowski, Andrew Jay Kozlowski, John Allen Indergaard and Jill Katherine Indergaard. Mert was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant son, David. Funeral service: Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in First Lutheran Church, Minot; Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot; Visitation: Wednesday from 2:00-7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. Memorials are preferred to the First Lutheran Radio Broadcast Fund, NARFE, Golden K Kiwanis, Second Story, Scandinavian Heritage Park or organization of the donor's choice.
