Description	:	Services for Merle E. Behmer, 74, of Hoskins will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoskins with the Rev. Rodney Rixe officiating and burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Norfolk. Military rites will be by the Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard, American Legion Post 16 and VFW Post 1644. He died Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Faith Regional Health Services. Merle was born on Aug. 30, 1935, in Norfolk, the son of Edward and Martha (Kollath) Behmer. He was raised on the family farm near Hoskins. He attended parochial school before graduating from Norfolk High School. Merle then graduated from Norfolk Junior College in 1953. He moved to Norfolk and worked in construction before entering the U.S. Army on Jan. 17, 1957. After basics, Merle returned to Norfolk and married Dorothy Johnson. The couple moved to California where Merle was stationed in San Francisco. After earning his honorable discharge on Jan. 16, 1959, the couple returned to Norfolk. Merle formed Behmer Construction. Merle was hired as one of the original eight instructors of the Northeast Technical Community College (NETCC). He taught construction for 17 years. In 1969, Merle moved his family back to the family farm near Hoskins. While he was teaching, Merle continued his construction business and farmed. Merle and Dorothy enjoyed taking their three sons to compete in many horse shows. He took great pride in their success as they annually competed at Ak-Sar-Ben. Merle is survived by his wife of 53 years; their sons, J.D. Behmer of Hoskins, Jeffery and his wife, Victoria T. Behmer of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mike Behmer of La Vista; one grandson, Justen; one cousin, Duane Behmer of Norfolk; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
