Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Boone. Merle Gene Leichliter, was born in Iowa City, Iowa on June 18, 1938, the son of Vernon and Frances (Dahlberg) Leichliter. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1958 and served with the Iowa National Guard for several years. On June 18, 1960, Merle married G. Karen Fitzgerald in Boone, Iowa. On February 25, 1959, Merle began his career for John Deere, at the Ankeny Plant, in the maintenance department and as a painter. He retired on April 26, 1991. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, mushrooming, Indian artifacts hunting and in his younger years, listing to music and going dancing. He was a perfectionist in the things he did. He was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart, Knights of Columbus Leo Council #814, UAW Local #350 and the Skilled Trades Union. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harold and Richard, two sisters, Evelyn and Verna, and a son-in-law, Dave Naab. Merle is survived by his wife, Karen of Boone; son, Todd Leichliter of San Francisco, California; two daughters, Gwen Naab of Spirit Lake and Natalie (Bret) Moorman of Boone; six grandchildren, Hannah Naab, Nicole Naab, Natasha Sawyer, Alex Moorman, Caitlin Moorman, and Thomas Leichliter; eight great grandchildren. Friends may call at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
