Merle Atwood, age 90, of Anamosa died this past Thursday morning, November 10, 1994 at the Anamosa Community Hospital following an extended illness. Merle Atwood was born March 19, 1904 in Missouri. He was the son of Bert and Bird Thompson Atwood. As a young boy his family moved to Iowa, settling in the Jones County area. On March 23, 1929 he was united in marriage with Anna Brockens in Monticello. Merle worked for Foley Construction, involved in the building of Highways 151 and 64, as well as the Wapsi River bridge now being replaced at the edge of town. He and Anna farmed many years in Wayne Township and moved to Anamosa in 1956, at which time he became a custodian for the Anamosa Schools Following retirement, he worked for Huerter's Locker in Anamosa. He is survived by one son, Dale and his wife Carol of Anamosa; one daughter Margaret Ann, Mrs. Glenn Sterling of Payson, Utah; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and two sisters, Nellie Houstman of Anamosa and Faye Carstens of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Anna on June 15, 1983; an infant daughter; two sisters, Hazel Leslie and Alma McCaughy and a half-sister Marie Dirks. Casketbearers ere Scott Sterling, Brett Atwood, Mitch Atwood, Dean Edwards, Curt Edwards and Gary Teymer. Honorary bearers ere Sara Lee and Cari Atwood. The Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa was in charge of arrangements.
