Graveside services were held Monday, Jan. 21, at the Eldora City Cemetery in Eldora, with Pastor Anne Lippincott officiating. Full military honors by Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless No. 3974 of the V.F.W. were provided. Merle was born Aug. 9, 1914, near Owasa, son of Christopher and Gusta Gabrielson Sayer. He attended school in Owasa and in New Providence. He was married to Avonelle Hubbard on her parents' farm southwest of Eldora. Merle served in the Army Air Corp from August 1942 until January 1946, serving in the Pacific Theater as an airplane mechanic. He was a 50-year member of the Walter-Sayer Post No. 182 of the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Avonelle; two sons, all of Eldora; two grandchildren; and a sister, of Ackley; numerous nieces and nephews. Her was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wendell, George and his twin brother, Earl; two sisters, Lucille Meeker and Esther Klooze
