Merle received his early education at Cornfield College in rural Clarke County and attended High School in Murray, Iowa graduating in 1948 as Class President. A lifetime farmer, Merle grew up on the family farm east of Murray, which will be a Century farm in 2018. He was very proud that his daughter Joyce and her husband Todd still live on and operate the farm where many family memories have been created. Following graduation, Merle worked for a time on the farm with his father until he was drafted in 1951. He served his country with the United States Marines Corps during the Korean War. He was stationed just south of the 38th Parallel at a small radar station for one year where he was tasked with keeping enemy aircraft out of South Korea as a radar operator. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1953. He was united in marriage to Mary Alice Sprague Swain on November 17, 1956 at What Cheer Christian Church. Four children blessed this union: Kevin Stanley, Cheryl Ann, Joyce Ellen and David Eugene. He was a loving husband, dad and grandpa “papa.” Merle was baptized at the age of 10 and remained a member of the Murray Church of Christ all of his life. He was a member and former President of Clarke County Feeder Calf Association. He served on the board of directors of Heartland Productions (which later became Russ Doughten Films). Included in the films produced was the award winning inspirational Christian film, "Thief In The Night." He also served as a board member of Clarke County Homemaker Service. Merle was an adult advisor for Murray (CRD) Community Resource Development, and a member of the Murray Community Betterment Organization. He belonged to William-Lochrie American Legion Post #405. Over the years, Merle loved attending his children’s and grandchildren's ballgames and events. He loved babysitting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, however, farming was his life. Those relatives who preceded Merle in death were his parents; sister, Lucile Marie Fuller; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Siegfried and Russell S. Doughten, Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be directed to the City of Murray for the Murray Recreational Project.
