Description	:	Merle Schott was born Feb. 15, 1908 in Lucas County and lived on a farm near Chariton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Carpenter and Blanche Mitchell Carpenter, an older sister, Gwen Crozier and young brother, George. An older sister, Maudie Smith, continues to reside in Chariton. Merle graduated from Chariton High School in 1926 and was a member of Otterbein Church. She received her teachers certificate in music education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and received her BA in music from Drake University in Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Carpenter and Blanche Mitchell Carpenter, an older sister, Gwen Crozier and young brother, George. An older sister, Maudie Smith, continues to reside in Chariton. Merle graduated from Chariton High School in 1926 and was a member of Otterbein Church. She received her teachers certificate in music education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and received her BA in music from Drake University in Des Moines. She taught music in Ireton and Nemaha. On June 8, 1938 she was joined in marriage to Milt Schott. They lived and farmed in Sac County until their retirement to Early in 1971. They were members of United Methodist Church in Sac City until 1950, when they transferred their membership to United Methodist Church in Nemaha. Merle continued to be an active member there, where she taught Sunday School for many years and loved directing die Children's Choir and singing in the adult choir. She was involved in many church and community activities, including membership in United Methodist Women, Federated Woman's Club, Eastern Star, Farm Bureau and Neighborly Club. Due to declining health in recent year, she became a resident of Park View Care Center in Sac City. Throughout her life, Merle loved singing, playing the piano and giving piano lessons. She directed plays in earlier years and more recently wrote poetry. All who knew her were aware of her generosity, her gardens, her home cooking and canning and her angel food cakes. Although she was blessed with a multitude of wonderful friends and neighbors and community activities, her greatest joy throughout her life was her family. Survivors include her sister, Maudie Smith of Chariton; three sisters-in-law, Helen Schott and Marie Hasch of Des Moines and Loretta (Mrs. Louis) Schott of Early; three children, Sharon (Mrs. Roger) Nichols of Prairie City, Shirley (Mrs. Norm) Fanning of Worthington, Minn, and M. Lee Schott and his wife Sue of Gaylord, Minn.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. (Storm Lake Times, 4-7-2001)
