The Rev. Eugene Schipper officiated at the service. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello. Merle, age 75, died Sunday morning September 29, at his residence in Center Junction following an unexpected illness. Merle was born February 16, 1921 at South Fork Township, Delaware County. He was the son of John and Lillie Henrichs Husmann. He was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Monticello and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Anamosa. He attended Antioch School near Anamosa until 8th grade and later graduated from Center Junction High School with the class of 1940. On April 19, 1941, he was united in marriage with Pauline Schoon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Anamosa. Merle worked at Hiebele Lumber Company in Cedar Rapids. In October of 1942, he moved to a farm near Center Junction where he farmed for five years. In 1947, he started his soil testing service and ran it until 1977. His many varied interests were managing farms, fishing, camping and helping others and loving his life and family. He served on the fire department for many years, served as Mayor of Center Junction, was President of the Center Junction Schools Board until it closed. He was the secretary for the Center junction rural fire department for 40 years, resigning this past September 9, 1996. He helped promote the Center Junction Park and also served on the Wayne Zion Church Board and the Center Junction Telephone Company. He was loved deeply by his wife and family and will be missed by his many, many friends. He is survived by his wife Pauline; one son, Nile (Judy) of Olin; one brother, Ralph (Doris) of Monticello; three grandchildren, Lance (Barb) of Ainsworth, Kolin of Ainsworth, Bryan (Pam) of Center Junction and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Dorothy. Casket bearers were Lance Husmann, Kolin Husmann, Bryan Husmann, Todd Husmann, Richard Wolken and Bruce Reade. Goettsch Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
