Description	:	Merlin was born in Rutland, South Dakota on July 3, 1918. He was the ninth child born to Thom and Julia Anderson. Merlin and Mildred (aka Millie and/or Bonnie) met at a dance in Browns Valley, Minnesota. Millie lived on a farm in Minnesota. She worked away from home a lot, doing housework for other people, coming home on the weekends. They drove... Read More	Merlin was born in Rutland, South Dakota on July 3, 1918. He was the ninth child born to Thom and Julia Anderson. Merlin and Mildred (aka Millie and/or Bonnie) met at a dance in Browns Valley, Minnesota. Millie lived on a farm in Minnesota. She worked away from home a lot, doing housework for other people, coming home on the weekends. Merlin lived on a farm on the shores of Big Stone Lake, South Dakota, where he helped on the farm, ice skated, fished and swam. They first came to Oregon in November 1941, before they were married. They drove Ora, Joyce and Betty out to Oregon to be with Cliff, who was working in Modoc Point. Merlin worked in the sawmill with Cliff in Modoc Point and lived with Ora and Cliff. Millie worked in Klamath Falls doing housework and caring for children during the week and stayed with Ora and family on weekends. Merlin and Millie got married in Klamath Falls, Oregon, February 27, 1942, and moved into a cabin near Cliff and Ora. In April, 1942, Merlin and Millie returned to South Dakota to help Merlins folks on the farm, as four of his brothers left for the war. George was in the Army, Clint, Ervin and Arlin were in the Navy. They lived on farms in Minnesota and South Dakota until 1952, when they moved to Washington and settled in Washougal. Merlin worked in the Crown Zellerbach paper in Camas, Washington for 11 years before moving to Sunnyside, Washington. He returned to Washougal in 1970 and worked for George Schmid Excavating and on the Bonneville Dam before retiring and moving to Lyle, Washington, in 1978. An avid fisherman, Merlin loved camping and the great outdoors. His hobbies were to include reading, wood carving and bird watching. Merlin died July 10, 2001, in The Dalles, Oregon. He was 83. He had 14 grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mildred, of Lyle; sons Dennis, of Washougal, Bill and his wife, Karen, of Camas, Dale and his wife, Leta, of Vancouver, Kenny and his wife, Karen, of Vancouver; daughters, Marilyn Chalstrom and her husband John, of Vancouver and Beverly Anderson of Vancouver.
