Merlin was born in Allen, NE.. November 25, 1918 to Rex and Alta Mae Filley Smith, The family moved to Mosca, Colorado to live with his grandparents. Merlin would call his grandfather, William F. Filley "Dad" and his aunt Charlotte (Steffens) would become his "sister". Merlin was raised in Mosca with his mother and stepfather Forest Maupin. The family would later move to Montrose, Co where Merlin graduated from high school. Merlin entered the Army as a young Private right after Pearl Harbor. He retired from the Army as a Major and then had a second career with the Colorado Department of Labor in Pueblo, Colorado. Throughout his entire life he was an exceptional and cheerful worker in the military and with the state of Colorado. Merlin held all of the enlisted ranks while in the Army and became an officer while serving during the Korean Conflict. He served his country well during WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the Dominican Republic. He received numerous decorations including the Bronze Star. He also worked and retired from the Colorado Department of Labor primarily at their Pueblo office. On August 31, 1941 Merlin married Margaret Williams and they shared almost 66 years of love together. Merlin and Margaret met in church in the company of good friends. Family, church, friends and helping people was always important to Merlin. Merlin loved the Lord and he loved his church. He was a servant of the Lord and participated in everything from cleaning the church to acting as an Elder and Deacon. The military moved Merlin often and the family traveled all over the world. Whether it was Germany, Virginia, California or Hawaii, his first job was finding a church home for his family. Merlin instilled faith in the Lord and a passion of service to his family and everyone around him. He was the one everyone went to when something needed to be organized and done. He was the "go to man" for his family, church, friends, work and community. He was a long time volunteer with the Visitors Center in Grand Junction and taught the 55 Alive Class. Merlin was a member of the Palisade Masonic Temple #125. Music was one of Merlin's passions. While in high school he played the Sax and loved to sing. Song brought joy to his soul and those around him. He was an active soloist in the church, lead many choral groups in church. He sang at weddings, funerals and other special occasions. He truly sang "for joy" when ever he could. One of his fondest memories was singing at his granddaughter Keely's wedding in Washington State. Travel was another one of Merlin's passions, his last trip was an Hawaiian Cruise just three years ago. He has been all over the world and in all 50 states. Merlin's favorite travels was to the Passion Play in Germany and a tour of Israel. While in Israel he was baptized in the River Jordan. Merlin was always full of energy and loved new things. He got a computer when in his 70's and really enjoyed his "Game Boy". He enjoyed long walks, baseball, hiking, the ocean and swimming pools (although he couldn't swim a lick) the great outdoors and above all else being with family and friends. Most importantly Merlin loved his family. Survivors include Merlin's wife of 65 years, Margaret Smith, a daughter Marilyn Ann "Smith" Kozak (Steven) of Minnesota, three sons Merlin James (Jim) Smith (Sally) of Washington, Paul L. Smith (Niki) of Denver and their adopted son Dou S. Kim (Yong) of Larkspur., Six grandchildren, Sherri Werner, Mathew Kozak, Keely Lohmolder, Keri Davidson, Kyle Smith, and Michael Kim, seven great grandchildren, Joshua, MacKenzie, Joseph, Ana, Ted, Ben and Bethany. Other survivors include three brothers Paul Maupin, Jack Smith, Harold Smith, and three sisters Bonnie Murray, Pat Kim, and Betty Smith. Merlin was preceded in death by his brother Rex Alvin Smith and sister Marilyn Jo Ann Smith Holmes. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, August 9, 2007 at the First Christian Church in Grand Junction. Committal services with full military honors will be performed at 3:00 p.m. at Grand Junction Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
