Description	:	Merlin James Lewis 98, a longtime Oswego resident passed from this life Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 1:30 a.m. at the Chetopa Manor. Merlin was born August 10, 1914 in Sherwin, KS to James Monroe Lewis and Lydia Young Lewis. Merlin was the oldest of seven children and the only surviving sibling upon his passing. Read More	Merlin James Lewis 98, a longtime Oswego resident passed from this life Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 1:30 a.m. at the Chetopa Manor. Merlin was born August 10, 1914 in Sherwin, KS to James Monroe Lewis and Lydia Young Lewis. Merlin was the oldest of seven children and the only surviving sibling upon his passing. He was expected to help his parents raise and support the family; therefore he only completed his education through the eighth grade. He loved reading and learning and continued to do so until his health failed him. Merlin and Hazel Irene Ohles were married July 10, 1936 in Oswego, KS by Rev. Colinger. They bought a farm in rural Oswego and farmed together until retiring and moving to town in 1980. Upon retirement they enjoyed traveling to various states and especially enjoyed spending the cold winters in Zappata, TX fishing. Hazel preceded him in death in 1996. Merlin is survived by his daughter Patricia Ann "Patsy" Waugh and husband Jimmy of Rural Edna, KS. Four grandchildren Mike Waugh and wife Nancy of Coffeyville, Lori Frost and husband Dale of Bernice, OK, Tonya Zwahlen and husband Mike of Oswego and Jerry Waugh and wife Carolyn of Edna. Eleven great grandchildren; Cody, Mindy,Rene', Bridget, Jimmy Clayton, Jody, Jimmy, Shandi, Jarrod, Bailey, and Dylan. Six great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Merlin was preceded in death by six brothers Roy, Raymond, Clinton, William, Glen, and Richard Lewis. One sister Alice. Twins Thelma and Velma Lewis and Lora Lewis passed at birth. Merlin was one of the original charter members establishing the Bartlett Coop in 1950 in Bartlett, KS. He was common stock holder and was on the board of directors. Merlin especially enjoyed fishing, leather crafts and sharing his talents with family and friends. His daughter Patsy cherished the annual vacation trips to the Colorado Mountains (of course after all the crops were harvested and school was on summer break). Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Merlin will being lying in state from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday, October 1, 2012 at Derfelt Funeral Home of Oswego, for friends who would like to pay respects.
