Description	:	Merlin Lloyd Bier, 80, of Alexander, died of cancer, on Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 11, at the First Reformed Church in Alexander, with Rev. Philip Arnold officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Alexander Cemetery. Merlin was born on April 25, 1923 in Franklin County, the son of Arthur and Ruth Halfpop Bier. He graduated from the Meservey High School in 1940. He married Arlene Schulte on January 23, 1944, at the First Reformed Church in Alexander. Merlin was a farmer, electrician, mechanic, tiler, plumber, carpenter, landscaper, welder and machinist. He was a member of the First Reformed Church, the Masons, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, the Blacksmith and Welders Assoc. and the BPOE. He served on the school board and coached little league. He enjoyed softball, bowling, golf and traveling. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Susan Bier of Williamsburg and Jerilyn (Delos) Hansen of Bettendorf; sons, David of Des Moines and Loren (D. J.) of Alexander; granddaughters, Kristen, Katie, Courtney, Pam and Sarah; and sister, Frances Dorenkamp of Iowa City. ©Belmond Independent 2003
