Naaf, 90 years of age, of Beatrice, Neb., passed away at the Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center Monday morning, Feb. 2, 2009. He was born on Sept. 20, 1918, near Summerfield, Kan., to Otto and Carrie (Brucker) Naaf, and was a 1937 graduate of Barneston High School in Barneston, Neb. Merlin served his country during World War II in the United States Army from Aug. 20, 1941, until Nov. 15, 1945. Merlin and Wilma Graham were married on Aug. 2, 1942, at Fort Snelling, Minn. They lived in Manhattan, Kan., until moving to Beatrice in 1952. He had been employed for the Jewel T Company as a salesman for 27 years before retiring in 1978, and had been a greeter at the Wal-Mart in Beatrice for five years. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Beatrice and had served several different terms as a deacon, and also was a member of the Bitting-Norman Post 27, American Legion. Merlin loved his grandchildren, watching sports and was a longtime Kansas State University Wildcat fan. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Wilma; two sons, Jerry Naaf and wife Doris of Citrus Heights, Calif., and Ron Naaf and wife Glenda of Beatrice; daughter, Julie Freed and husband David of Lisbon, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Jim Naaf and wife Debra of Napa, Idaho, Tom Naaf and wife Kim of Boise, Idaho, Stephanie Jensen and husband Scott of Eagle, Neb., Sarah Mount and husband Josh of Peru, Neb., Jonathan Naaf of Beatrice, Kelsey Freed and Evan Freed, both of Lisbon, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren, Heather Naaf, Nick Naaf, and Brad Naaf, all of Boise, Idaho, Colton, Conner and Cailin Jensen of Eagle, Neb., and Christian Mount of Grand Island, Neb.; and one great-great-grandson, Gabriel Bird of Boise, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Carrie (Brucker) Naaf; and two brothers, Norman and Irvin Naaf. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, First Christian Church, Seventh and Ella streets, Beatrice, the Rev. David Bigley officiating. Interment will be in the Mission Creek Cemetery near Liberty, Neb. The body will lie in state Wednesday from 1 p.m.-9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel, 708 N. Sixth, Beatrice, and at the church one hour preceding the service on Friday. A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 a.m. Friday in the church parlor.
