He was born on August 9, 1928, in Susanville, to Eddie and Valera (Groxdal) Spann. Read More	News-Review, The - (Mar/2/2005) Roseburg, Oregon SPANN, Merlin Samuel, Age 76, of Tenmile, Oregon, formerly of Susanville, California, passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2005. He was born on August 9, 1928, in Susanville, to Eddie and Valera (Groxdal) Spann. He was raised and educated in Susanville, attending Washington, McKinley and Roosevelt grade schools before graduating from Lassen Union High School. He entered the U.S. Navy on June 28, 1946, to serve our country. He was discharged in 1948. He returned to Northern California, working for Lassen Lumber for five years. He was united in marriage to Joyce Lucille Evans on July 31, 1949, at the Baptist Temple in Modesto, California. He went to work as a rookie at the Susanville Police Department and later graduated from the FBI Academy. He retired as Susanville's First Captain in 1983, after twenty-four years of service to his community. He and Joyce moved to Tenmile in 1985, which has been their home since. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Joyce; his mother, Valera, both of Tenmile; sons, Rocky and his wife, Roxie of Roseburg, Oregon; Rodney and his wife, Freida of Coos Bay, Oregon; William and his fiance, Kristy of Janesville, California; nine grandchildren and nine, almost to be ten, great-grandchildren. He is survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roy and Youtha Evans; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Arland and Marjorie Stokes, both of Hayward, California; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Norval and Joyce Evans of Roseburg; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Eddie in 1993 and a son, Staff Sergeant Merlin Roy in 1979. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Tenmile Rural Volunteer Fire Department. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2005, at 2:00 p.m., at Taylor's Family Chapel. Friends may pay their respects on Wednesday evening, March 2, 2005, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Services in Susanville will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2005, at 1 p.m., at Walton's Colonial Chapel. Interment will follow at the Janesville Cemetery with military rites by the VFW.
