Merlyn died Thursday, January 25, 2018, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, Nebraska. Merlyn J. Walton, son of Floyd and Adeline (Janna) Walton, was born September 17, 1940, at Orchard, Nebraska. When Merlyn was seven, his family moved to Winnetoon, where he attended school through 8th grade. He graduated from Creighton High School in 1958. On October 3, 1959, Merlyn was united in marriage to Ann Mlady, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Verdigre by Reverend O’borny. Merlyn and Ann lived in Omaha for one year after their marriage and he worked for Genuine Parts. Their daughter, Laurie, was born while they lived in Omaha. In the fall of 1960, the family moved to Winnetoon where Merlyn worked for Arlie Sorensen and later Richard Rice. In 1961, Merlyn and Ann moved to Verdigre. Here their son Dwaine was born. Merlyn first worked at the Verdigre Creamery and on July 29, 1963, he began working with N&B Gas Company. He was employed there for 54 years. Merlyn was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church where he was a past parish council member. He and Ann also took care of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery for many years. Merlyn was also an EMT on Verdigre’s first rescue unit. He was a member of Verdigre Fire Department, Heritage Museum Board, and Improvement Club. Merlyn was part of the pyrotechnic team that would travel to nearby towns to detonate fireworks for local celebrations. Merlyn loved horses and took advantage of every opportunity in sharing that love with others. He would give grade school children hayrack rides with his palominos, brought Santa Claus to Santa Day, and would chauffer brides and grooms around after their marriage. Merlyn would often be found lining up the entries for the annual Kolache Days Parade while riding his horse. Merlyn could fix anything. He was on call 24/7 for his N&B Gas customers, his family, church, friends, and anyone that needed repair work done. Merlyn is survived by his wife, Ann Walton of Verdigre, Nebraska; children, Laurie (Dale) Schulte and Dwaine Walton all of Verdigre; three grandchildren, five great grandchildren ; brother, Don (Ruby) Walton; brothers-in-law, Johnny (Jackie) Mlady and Marvin Mlady; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Adeline Walton; brothers, Loren (Donetta) Walton and Ivan (Marvetta) Walton; nieces, Susan Emory and Kathy Walton; and nephews, Danny Mlady, Jerry Mlady, Grayling Anderson, and Tim Thompson. ...Provided by Vicky Johnson
