Description	:	Merna Jean Van Laar, age 89, was born November 1, 1931, to Claude and Arlene (Buell) Stogdill in Decatur County, Iowa. She passed away peacefully at the Mt. Ayr Health Care Center in Mt. Ayr, Iowa on Sunday, December 27, 2020. Merna grew up and attended school, graduating from Grand River High School in 1949. She taught country school for two years then taught kindergarten for 25 years at Grand Valley School retiring only to go back and work as a pre-school aide for many more years. In 1997, Merna was surprised to learn she had won the Golden... Read More	Merna Jean Van Laar, age 89, was born November 1, 1931, to Claude and Arlene (Buell) Stogdill in Decatur County, Iowa. She passed away peacefully at the Mt. Ayr Health Care Center in Mt. Ayr, Iowa on Sunday, December 27, 2020. Merna grew up and attended school, graduating from Grand River High School in 1949. She taught country school for two years then taught kindergarten for 25 years at Grand Valley School retiring only to go back and work as a pre-school aide for many more years. In 1997, Merna was surprised to learn she had won the Golden Apple Award. She absolutely loved the little ones she taught over the years and could tell many stories. She and Donald Frederick Van Laar eloped to Bethany, Missouri on January 28, 1950. They were blessed with three children, Randy, Vicki, and Danny. She enjoyed gardening with Donald, always taking their big watermelons and tomatoes to the Iowa State Fair. She won many ribbons. She also enjoyed trying to grow big dahlias. They enjoyed many fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada over the years. In later years, Merna and Donald enjoyed going out to eat almost every evening and usually ending up at the casino. She also loved to be with family, especially the grandkids. She hosted many holiday meals. Merna was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. She would sit in front of the TV wearing her Hawkeye shirt with her Hurkey stuffed toy, cheering the team on. Preceding her in death were her parents; and husband, Donald on August 27, 2014.
