Merna Mae Dorothy, daughter of Otto and Mina (Oxtoby) Wiese, was born January 23, 1923 in Oakes, ND. Read More	Merna Treeby, 94, of Hecla, SD, passed away August 13, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Oakes, ND. Merna Mae Dorothy, daughter of Otto and Mina (Oxtoby) Wiese, was born January 23, 1923 in Oakes, ND. She attended Divide Township School #1 through 8th grade, graduated with honors from Oakes High School in 1941, and attended NDSU in Fargo. Merna moved to California where she worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad and later Western Pipe and Steel Company. While in California, she also worked for a camera shop which led to Merna modeling on weekends and evenings for local department stores. In 1945, she came home to North Dakota for a visit. While attending a dance in Ludden, ND, her brother, Ray Wiese, introduced her to Harold Treeby. Harold convinced Merna not to return to California and they were married on March 15, 1946. Harold and Merna took over the family farming and ranching operation. They were blessed with four children, Colin, Cameron, Darcy, and Hollis. The family enjoyed raising, training, and showing quarter horses, as well as competing in rodeos. In the late 1960's they started a summer ranch vacation business for children, which began a 40-year friendship with another “daughter” Laura Margolis. Merna was an active member of the Hecla United Methodist Church, from being a lay reader to singing in the choir and working with the United Methodist Women. She belonged to the Hecla Development Corporation and Hecla Building Committee, the Brown County Republican Executive Board, the Greater Hecla Association and the Hecla General Federated Study Club. She served as the first woman Director of the Northern Electric Cooperative Board at Bath, SD, and was elected to the board of the East River Power Cooperative. Gardening was one of Merna's passions. She ran a truck garden business, selling fresh produce and delicious pickles, jam, and salsa in Aberdeen. Merna loved her grandchildren and was always interested in and proud of their accomplishments. In her “spare time” she enjoyed playing bridge. She is survived by her children, Colin (Mary)Treeby, Cameron (Sheila) Treeby and Hollis (Karen) Treeby; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Merna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold on December 18, 1990, daughter Darcy Bushby on December 5, 2004, son-in-law Derwin Bushby, sister Eudora, and brothers Raymond, Clifford and Walter. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Hecla, SD, with Reverend Rodney Ulmer officiating.
