Miller, the daughter of Eugene and Lilly (Lurk) Gerhart was born on September 20, 1917 at Lawrence, NE. She was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence, NE. Merriam attended Lawrence Public School until the 8th grade, she then attended NYA School in Hastings and trained to be nanny and housekeeper. She worked for the Kushing family, caring for their children and the home. Merriam later moved to Lincoln and worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital running the kitchen. The Doctors there referred to her as “Happy Jack” due to her happy personality and willingness to help. While in Lincoln Merriam met Stanley Miller at a dance. On April 12, 1947 Merriam was united in marriage to Stanley at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Lincoln, NE. The couple farmed in the Ashland area from 1947 until 1961 when they moved to Scottsdale, AZ, Lubbock, TX, and Grand Island, NE, before moving to Albion in 1982. Merriam and Stanley operated a small mobile home park while retiring in Albion. Following Stanley’s death in 1992 Merriam stayed in Albion but traveled to her children’s homes and stayed with them. Merriam was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion, NE as well as the Altar Society. She also was a member of a card club, writer’s club, and a bible study. Merriam enjoyed writing poetry, and she was a wonderful cook, but her passion was being the best mother in the world. She loved to visit and stay with her kids. Merriam is survived by her five children: Mary Elizabeth (Bob) Kimbrell of Orlando, FL; Michael Ray (Dagmar) Miller of Denver, CO; Robert Allen (Donna) Miller of New China, NC; Timothy Lee (Cheryl) Miller of Medford, OR; Jeffery Lynn (Claudia) Miller of Parker, CO; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Robert Joseph (Stacy) Miller and children Henry and Owen; Russell (Rachel) Miller and children Thomas and Amelia Mae; Valerie (Rob)Yates and children Alexis and Declan; Stan, Emily, and Andrea Miller; Mackenzie Lynn, Samuel Hans, and Adela Maria Miller; and Julia Steiner; brother Richard (Connie) Gerhart of Hastings, NE; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Stanley; three sisters: her twin Mildred Fleming, Betty Hinzman, and Katherine Lesperance; two brothers: Eugene Gerhart, Jr., and Charles Gerhart.
