He attended Hastings Public School. Merrill's parents moved the family to Montana in 1908 and lived on the irrigated valley in the Bull Mountain area, four miles north of Billings, Montana in Yellowstone County, near Shepherd, Montana for five years, then they purchased a farm fifteen miles northeast of Billings, Montana. Their homestead was near Laurel, Montana. Merrill attended schools in Montana while living there. The family returned to Mills County, Iowa in 1919. Merrill dropped out of high school around his junior year and then attended the Omaha Barber College from which he graduated. He then started his barbering practice in Hastings, Iowa, Mills County. On October 8, 1927, Merrill married Nellie Sophia Wilhemina Hallquist in Fremont, Nebraska. Nellie Hallquist, daughter of Edward Frank and Minnie Otellia (Ring) Hallquist, was born on April 27, 1904, on a farm near Red Oak, Iowa in Montgomery County. She attended a rural one room school and graduated from Red Oak High School in Red Oak, Iowa in 1921. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa for two years. She taught fifth grade in Hastings School in Hastings, Iowa where she met Merrill Aaron Crouse. After their marriage they moved to Henderson, Iowa where Merrill barbered for 13 years. Merrill and Nellie had one child, a daughter, Colette Minnie Crouse Wortman who was born June 13, 1937. In the fall of 1940, the family moved back to Hastings where Merrill farmed the home farm (which he later purchased) until his death. From 1955 until his death, he also barbered part time in Glenwood.
