Description	:	MERRILL THUIRER was born on the family homestead in Summit township May 10, 1904 of pioneer parents Clarence, and Elnora Thuirer. He attended local schools and became a graduate of Iowa State College in 1927. Upon return from school he took over the family farm raising shorthorn cattle and Poland China breeding hogs. He later abandoned this business in favor of a working dairy herd of Holstein milk cows and small grain farming. Read More	MERRILL THUIRER was born on the family homestead in Summit township May 10, 1904 of pioneer parents Clarence, and Elnora Thuirer. He attended local schools and became a graduate of Iowa State College in 1927. Upon return from school he took over the family farm raising shorthorn cattle and Poland China breeding hogs. He later abandoned this business in favor of a working dairy herd of Holstein milk cows and small grain farming. He married Lucile Knudson, a school teacher, in 1929, and raised two sons John and James. He was adult 4-H leader ten years, named Farmer of the Year by the Spencer Daily Reporter and like his parents was an active member of Grace Methodist Church in Spencer. Following Lucile's death in 1968, Merrill married Berniece Clark in 1971 and retired from the family farm moving to Walnut, Iowa. Following the death of his second wife, he moved to live with his son Jim near Seattle, WA Following a few months of illness this past year, he died at Issaquah, WA. January 21, 2001. Merrill is survived by his 98 year old brother Leland Thuirer, Spencer; Dale Thuirer, Spirit Lake; Florence Harmon, Milwaukee, Oregon; Marjorie Bower, Colorado Springs, CO. An infant brother Ralph preceded him in death. Other survivors include sons: John Thuirer of Largo, FL; Reverend James Thuirer, North Bend, WA; Stepson; Ronald Clark and wife Mary Lou, Walnut, IA. Also surviving are grandchildren Laura Thuirer and Debra Corbett of Birmingham, AL, Teri Larew, Michael Thuirer, Christal Dixon, Kyly Heppenstall, Karrie Ayers, Jamie Masters of Washington State, Teresa Merrill in St. Louis, MO, and 13 great grand children. Memorial services were held Jan. 27, 2001 in Washington State led by his son James. Following grave side rites at Spencer February 3, 2001 local family and friends may attend a gathering of remembrance at 1:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, Spencer. The family requests memorials be made to Grace United Methodist Church or Iowa State University Marching Band.
