He was born Feb. 14, 1924, in Fort Dodge to Spencer and Nellie Staton Greer. He married Laura Maxine Richards on Nov. 7, 1942. She died Aug. 24, 1993. A resident of Ottumwa most of his life, he had been employed at John Deere Ottumwa works for 30 years, retiring in 1983. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 of American Legion and a lifetime member of Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by five daughters, Peggy Courtney, Debbie Wallace, Cindy Osteen, Tammy Brenneman and Tina McClaskey, all of Ottumwa; eight sons, Merrill Jr. “Sonny,” Jim, Bill, Jack, John, Ed and Terry of Ottumwa and Homer of Alliance, Neb.; 20 grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in a death by an infant daughter, Shirley; a granddaughter and a grandson. The service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa, with Park Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Military service at the grave will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 of American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Pallbearers will be Gilbert Paxton, Brad Moore, Dick O’Brien, Harlan McCoy, Dick Cundiff, Bob Hem, John Munley and Dean Cremer. Memorials may be made to O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 of American Legion or Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
