Thom, 77 years old, died Sunday, July 12, 2005, at the Reid Hospital in Richmond after an extended illness. A son of the late John and Venora Wheatley Thom, Merle was born in Star City, Ind., on Feb. 24, 1928. He attended Lincoln High School and served in the United States Navy. He retired on June 30, 1989, from NASCO, a ship-building company in San Diego, Calif., where he was a quality control inspector. After his retirement he moved back to Dublin in July of 1989. He enjoyed gardening and visiting with family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion Post 169 of Cambridge City. Survivors include one son, William “Bud” (wife Nadia) Thom of Virginia Beach, Va.; two daughters, Joanie Moore of Cambridge City and Marsha (husband Eddie) Hall of Cambridge City; five grandchildren, Jenny (husband Jason) Hammons of Connersville, Becki (husband Thomas) Abbe of Spring Valley, Calif., Travis (wife Christina) Thom of El Cajon, Calif., Annie (husband John) Phillips of Trenton, Ohio, Bo Grajeda of Vancouver, Wash.; eight great-grandchildren, Nathan and Jacob Abbe, Makala Hammons, Bailey and Jordan Thom, Jack, Bailey and Brynne Phillips and Morgan Moore; two sisters, Dorothy Moistner of Cambridge City and Martha Taylor of Dublin; nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife G. Jean Heuer Thom, on Feb. 28, 1989. They were married in Vernon, Ky., on May 17, 1947; one son, Wade Randall "Randy” Thom; four brothers, Edwin, Charles, John and Paul Thom; two sisters, Ellen and Rachel. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Dublin. Pastor Hobby of the Zion Lutheran Church in Pershing will officiate. Burial with military graveside services conducted by the American Legion Post 169 will follow in the South Lawn Cemetery in Dublin. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. till time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home.
