Description	:	Merritt was the son of Merritt Clark Foster, Sr. and Polly Clark. He and Amanda Faye were the parents of Charles C., Merritt C. III, Luke Wilbur and Hattie Foster. His children with Dorcas L. Stringer were Laura E., Ada A. and Ida A. Foster. He had one daughter with Eliza W. Prouty; Harriet E. Foster. During the Civil War Merritt Foster enlisted as a private with Company H, 3rd Infantry Regiment Colorado and was promoted to Full Sergeant. He had one daughter with Eliza W. Prouty; Harriet E. Foster. During the Civil War Merritt Foster enlisted as a private with Company H, 3rd Infantry Regiment Colorado and was promoted to Full Sergeant. He mustered out on October 1, 1863 and transferred to Company M, 2nd Cavalry Regiment Colorado and Company H, 3rd Infantry Regiment Colorado. Although he married Eliza Prouty in 1859 and was married to her when he entered the war it appears he never returned to her in Minnesota after the war and instead went on to Kansas. He married Amanda Faye on March 21, 1865 in Coffey County, Kansas. In 1865 Merritt and Amanda farmed in Coffey County, Kansas until 1875; sometime between 1875 and 1880 they left Kansas and Amanda died on May 2, 1880 in Eureka, California. In June of 1880 Merritt is listed as widowed and farming in Eureka. In 1883 he married Dorcas L. Stringer. In 1892 Merritt and Dorcas are living in Freshwater, Humboldt, California. Merritt Foster along with C. Crocker started the first stageline between Freshwater and Eureka.
