His death casts a pall of gloom over the Independence Township portion of the county. Merritt Fenton, age 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fenton, of Independence Township Northwest of Brushy, was brought to St. Joseph's Hospital here last night in a critical condition as the result of abdominal gun wounds Mr. Fenton was entered at the hospital at 8:30 PM following a tragedy occurring near his home at approximately 6:30 PM. Taking a shotgun the young man had gone several hundred feet from the barn on the Fenton Farm. Later he came to the house terribly wounded. It was found that two shells had been exploded in the gun and at least one of the charges and possibly two entered his abdomen. Little hope for his recovery was held at the hospital this afternoon. The victim is well-known in the Northwest part of the county and the news of the tragedy has brought sorrow to a great many relatives and friends. Indications seems to be that the wounds were not made by accident. Despondency was cited as a possible motive. Centerville Daily Iowegian Friday, January 5, 1934 Merritt Fenton, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Fenton, was taken to the Centerville Hospital Friday evening and died to Saturday afternoon. He was born March 26, 1909 and was 24 years, nine months and four days old. He accepted Christ as his savior during the ministry of Rev. A. J. Gumm, and became a member of the Chariton River Baptist church. He was a partner with his father in the farming interests and will be sadly missed in the home. He is survived by his father, mother, one brother, A. R. Fenton, of Numa, and two sisters, Mrs. Flossie Strandberg of Centerville and Miss Vera at home. He had made many friends during his short life who regret very much his early death. Funeral service was conducted by Rev. A. J.
