Leonard and Rose Heller Leonard on Oct. 30, 1916 at Geneva, and passed away May 19, 2005, at The Hearthstone in York at the age of 88 years, six months and 20 days. He was one of four children in the family. Mervin was born and raised on a farm between Strang and Geneva. His early education was at a country school, and he graduated from Geneva High School. He lived most of his life in Geneva until 2000 when he moved to The Hearthstone in York. Mervin worked at Koehler hatchery, Girls Training School and as custodian at Geneva Public Schools. His work was interrupted while he served in the Pacific during World War II. Mervin enjoyed sports and loved to attend any sports event, especially when his nieces or nephews were involved. He was always ready to get-together with friends or family for a game or two of cards. He was active in the VFW in Geneva from the beginning and was a lifetime member of both the VFW and the Legion. Mervin was also in charge of the alumni pictures for Geneva High School for many years. He always loved to share his experiences while in the Army and about his work. Mervin always wore a smile and will be remembered for his dry wit. Mervin was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Rose Leonard; brother, Kenneth and wife Betty Leonard; brothers-in-law, Harold Stoldorf, Elvin Krause and Louis Kelch. He is survived by sister, Bernadine Krause and Vivian Stoldorf Kelch; nieces, Virginia and husband Floyd Richardson, Julie Stoldorf, Karen and husband Rich Wymore; nephews, Bob and wife Betty Stoldorf, Gary and wife LaDonna Krause, Gale and wife Shara Krause, Roger and wife Anne Krause and Larry and wife Gaylene Leonard. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva on Monday, May 23, with Rev. Pat Kelley and Rev. Floyd Richardson officiating. Musical selections for the service were “Whispering Hope” and “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.” Casket bearers were Todd Richardson, John Paul Richardson, Chris Richardson, James Krause, Adam Krause and Ryan Wymore. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Geneva VFW Samuel J. Marsh Post No. 7102 provided Military Honors. The Nebraska Signal June 1st, 2005 page 12.
