He is the only son of his parents Roscoe and Mary Ella (Smith) McClure who resided his entire life in Lincoln County, Washington except for his military service in India and China with the United States Army Air-Force during World War II. Mervyn and his father Roscoe for a time during the 1930's resided at and farmed the "Denson place" in Bluestem, Washington and at his mother's residence in Sprague, Washington. Before entering the military service in 1942 he described his previous employment as a farmer of a 480 acre farm near Mondovi, Washington; raising grain and livestock for commercial purposes and who had taken courses in veterinary work and livestock management. Plowing, cultivating, planting, and harvesting wheat using all types of farm machinery and equipment. General maintenance of buildings and machinery; who also trained horses for tricks, saddle and harness. The McClure family had a love for horses and rodeo's. The family would attend and participate in local rodeo's in Lincoln County as well as travel to other counties and rodeo events like the Pendleton Round-Up in Oregon. Mervyn entered active duty military service on the 14th of November 1942 with the United States Army Air-Force at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah. He went through basic military training at Fort Francis E. Warren, Laramie, Wyoming and (USAAF) Automotive Mechanics School in Bloomington, Illinois before being transferred to Camp Sutton, North Carolina to await his duty assignment. He was assigned to the the U.S. Army Air Force India-China Division (ICD) where he spent some time in India before spending the majority of his military service near Kunming, China in support of "The India-China Airlift" (July 1942 – December 1945) called "The Hump" which was the name given by Allied pilots in the Second World War to the eastern end of the Himalayan Mountains over which they flew military transport aircraft from India to China to resupply the Chinese war effort of Chiang Kai-shek and the units of the United States Army Air Forces (AAF) based in China. Description of his service was as an automotive mechanic: Working in a squadron motor pool doing all types of general repair and maintenance on all types of trucks and military vehicles. Tearing down, repairing and building up engines. Aligning wheels and lights; also working on transmissions and rear ends using all kinds of mechanic's hands tools and some bench tools. After being discharged from the military at Fort Lewis, Washington on the 12th of January 1946; he like many military service men of that time returned home to marry and start a family giving birth to the "Baby Boomer" generation. Mervyn married Gertrude Laupp on the 29th of January 1946 at his mother Mary Ella Duncan's residence in Sprague, Washington just 17 days after his exit from the service.
