Description	:	Merwin G. Strope Sr., 80, son of W.M. and Ella Strope, was born at Venus, Dec. 30, 1889 and died May 18 at the home of his son in Orchard. He attended Sunday School and church all his life and was an active member of the Wesleyan Church at Venus. He taught Sunday School as long as he was able. In recent years he attended church in a wheelchair. He served as treasurer of the Venus school board for many years. Mr. Strope was born and reared on his father's farm near Venus. Strope Sr., 80, son of W.M. and Ella Strope, was born at Venus, Dec. 30, 1889 and died May 18 at the home of his son in Orchard. He attended Sunday School and church all his life and was an active member of the Wesleyan Church at Venus. He taught Sunday School as long as he was able. In recent years he attended church in a wheelchair. He served as treasurer of the Venus school board for many years. Mr. Strope was born and reared on his father's farm near Venus. He lived there with the exception of two years in Creighton and two years he attended the Agricultural School in Lincoln. He started farming on his father's farm in 1911, living there until 1918, when he moved to his own farm north of Orchard, where he lived until 1967, when his health failed. He spent many weeks in hospitals and was admitted to the Creighton Care Centre in October of 1967. In July 1968, he was moved to the home of his son, Vernon, in Orchard. He married Octavia Anson, Oct. 18, 1911. Five children were born to them, Charley, Vernon and Merwin Jr. of Orchard, Shirley (Irwin) Woodworth of Eagle Bend, Minn and Dolores (Philip) Darr of Underwood, Minn. They made a foster home for Sharon Wellman, after her mother's death. Sharon was only a few months old. Mr. Strope is survived by his wife; children; 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; one brother, Floyd of Norfolk and one sister, Maude Olson of Keahaven in Neligh. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, one granddaughter and one great granddaughter. Funeral services were held at the Venus Wesleyan Church, May 21 with the Rev. Walter Steinkeamp, pastor and the Rev. Charles Philips, former pastor, officiating. Pallbearers were his grandsons. ...The Creighton News 18 June 1970
