Born in Madison, Wisconsin; raised in Devils Lake, ND. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1955 as an electronics technician. He served aboard an arctic survey ship, a destroyer, a sub tender and two heavy cruisers, one of which was deployed to Vietnam. He was an instructor at Dam Neck, Base Electronics Officer at Little Creek, and his last tour was as Station Conmmander of the NATO Satellite Communications Station in Northwest Virginia. In 1976, he retired as a "Mustang" Lieutenant. He earned a B. S. Degree in Biology from SUNY shortly before retiring, followed by graduate work at VCU. He was a dedicated and accomplished distance runner. He ran the first Richmond marathon, numerous Shanmrock marathons, as well as several 50 milers and one 75 miler. As he grew older, he delighted in running shorter races and winning his age group. His hobbies included reading, working out complicated iris pedigrees, cooking, genealogy and gardening. He was a life member of the American Iris Society, where he served in many capacities, some quite innovative. For these services, he received the AIS Gold Medal. He is survived by his wife, Anne; daughter, Hannah (Chuck); son, Eric (Patricia); stepson, Alan Smith (Debra); five grandchildren, a sister and one brother. At his request, no formal services will be held. Friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life on May 4, following the 11 a.m. service at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in McKenney, VA. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd, c/o Nancy Zehmer, P. O. Box 356, McKenney, VA 23872.
