Calwell, chief clerk in the Harrisonburg postoffice and one of the most popular citizens of the town, died Tuesday morning at 4:30 at his home on High street. Death was due to heart trouble of long standing, and the end had been expected almost hourly since Sunday. Mr. Calwell has been a sufferer from heart trouble for several years, but within the last few months the disease became acute and he declined rapidly. Early this summer he had been compelled to give up active work at the postoffice and for a time was confined to his bed. Later he went to his old home at Lewisburg, W.Va., and spent three weeks. Since his return he had been out of the house but little. Last Thursday he took a decided turn for the worse. After Thursday night he had few lucid moments, although occasionally he would rally and be able to converse with members of his family and friends for a brief time. He had been unconscious since Sunday. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock from Emmanuel Episcopal church, of which Mr. Calwell had been a member since his youth. The services was conducted by Rev. Robert U. Brooking, the rector. Interment was in Woodbine Cemetery. Michael Bowyer Calwell was born at White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., May 24, 1863. He was a son of the late Bedford Calwell, whose death occurred in Harrisonburg four or five years ago. His mother was Miss Margaret Frazier, a granddaughter of Col. Michael Bowyer, of Revolutionary fame, for whom he was named. He was a member of the well known West Virginia family of Calwells, his father and grandfather having owned the celebrated White Sulphur Springs, in Greenbrier county, for many years. In 1893 Mr. Calwell came to Harrisonburg and established himself in the mercantile business, conducting a store in the old Effinger building at the corner of the Square and West Market street, and later in the Spotswood building. In the summer of 1898, following the appointment of A. P. Funkhouser as postmaster at Harrisonburg, Mr. Calwell was made general delivery clerk, a position he filled with conspicuous fidelity until last spring, when he was promoted to chief clerk by Postmaster Keezel. For a number of years he also conducted the old Warren House. Surviving him are his wife, who was Miss Alberta Roller, a daughter of the late Peter S. Roller, to whom he was married in 1889; and three daughters—Frances M.; Josephine C., and Sallie Alberta. Mr. Calwell was the last of his father's family, the only near relatives surviving him being a nephew, James Calwell, of Roanoke, formerly of Harrisonburg, and three nieces. "Mike" Calwell—as he was familiarly and affectionately known to perhaps half the people of Harrisonburg—was a man of true heart and sunny disposition. He looked upon the brighter side of life and possessed a temperament whose cordiality and sincerity were proverbial. His good humor was as wholesome as sunshine, warming and brightening the atmosphere of any company in which he was thrown. Tenderly loved by the members of his own household, and highly esteemed in a wide circle of acquaintances, he perhaps lived and died without an enemy. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from Emmanuel Episcopal church, the services being conductd by Rev. R. U. Brooking, the rector. The church was filled with friends of the deceased, who gathered to pay a last tribute of affection and esteem. There were many beautiful floral tributes, among which was a large pillow of roses with the letters " P.O.D. " a tribute from the Harrisonburg postoffice force and from the railway mail clerks running into Harrisonburg, by whom Mr. Calwell as held in high regard. The pallbearers were Postmaster Charles M. Keexel; Wilmer C. Chandler, Ed. C. Martz, Claude L. Wilton, John J. Hawse, and Lunsford L. Lewis.
