Mrs. Callan accompanied him to Omaha and was with him much of the time during his short stay in the hospital. Mr. Callan had been in failing health for five years but his final illness was of five week's duration. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock yesterday morning at St. Mary's church with Rev. Fr. R. Graf staying mass. The rosary was read Tuesday in the Callan home. Michael C. Callan, son of Michael and Catherine Callan, was born at Ossian, Iowa, July 12, 1868. He went to Union county with his parents when he was two years old, locating on a homestead near Alcester. Later he came to Hawarden and made a home for his mother for a number of years. He married Miss Catherine Burke in Hawarden January 27, 1904, Rev. Fr. Masterson performing the ceremony. They observed their 45th wedding anniversary this past January. Mr. Callan was a farmer and cattle feeder throughout most of his life. Even after he came to Hawarden he continued to feed cattle on a large scale. At one time he owned a ranch in western South Dakota but never lived there. Survivors are his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Gregerson of Council Bluffs; three sons, William of Durand, Wis., Eugene of Defiance, Ohio, and Cameron of Ford Dodge; a brother, Gene Callan of Madison, S.D., who is ill in a hospital; a sister, Mrs. C.E. Sawyer, who is also ill in a hospital, at Albuquerque, N. Mex., and 13 grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. J.H. Crowder, died 12 years ago. Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Gregerson of Council Bluffs, Mr. and Mrs. William Callan of Durand, Wis., Eugene Callan of Defiance, Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Cameron Callan of Fort Dodge, Mrs. A.H. Nolan, Mrs. Genee Callan and Ed and William Callan, all of Madison, S.D., and Mrs. F.J. Webber and Mrs. Isabelle Elliott of Sioux City. The Independent (Hawarden, Iowa) 2/24/1949
