Michael “Mike” Charles Elgie was born June 26, 1955, the son of Vencile Charles and Donna Mae (Stalwick) Elgie, in Minot, ND. Michael “Mike” Charles Elgie was born June 26, 1955, the son of Vencile Charles and Donna Mae (Stalwick) Elgie, in Minot, ND. He was raised and educated in Minot, graduating from Minot High School in 1973. While in high school, Mike played varsity football, basketball and baseball. He then attended Minot State University, where he played basketball and baseball and was a member of the Sig Tau Fraternity. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1977. Following graduation, he began working for the City of Minot Recreation/Auditorium. He served as the Assistant Recreation Director until 1990, when he began his career with State Farm Insurance. He worked as a claim’s specialist with both home and auto claims until his retirement in 2017. Mike was united in marriage to the love of his life, Tammy Gandrud on September 21, 1985. This year they celebrated their 35th Wedding Anniversary. From this union, they were blessed with two sons, Zachary Charles, born Oct. 28, 1989, and Luke Taylor, born Aug. 19, 1992. Mike was so proud when he was watching both his sons play sports. He was their biggest fan and always had a tip for them to better their game. He was a diehard Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan. He was an avid supporter of sports in Minot and the surrounding area. He was a NDHSAA football referee for 47 years. He took pride in his immaculate lawn and put his skills to work at the Vardon Golf Club in his retirement. From the time he was a young child, Mike enjoyed spending time at Lake Metigoshe with family and friends. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, the NDHSAA and the Minot State University Beaver Boosters. He was inducted into the Magic City Youth Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013. His loving family includes: wife of 35 years, Tammy, Minot, ND; sons, Zac (Liz) Elgie, Minot, ND (who are expecting their first child and Mike’s first grandson, in April of 2021) and Luke Elgie and his special friend, Kaitlyn Weigel, Bismarck, ND; mother, Donna Mae Elgie, Minot, ND; sisters, Karen Morkve, Minot, ND, and Deb (Jerry) Oberholtzer, Lansford, ND; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Milford and Ona Gandrud, Minot, ND; sister-in-law, Tonya (Dave) Pankow, Minot, ND; brother-in-law, Todd (Connie) Gandrud, San Marcos, TX; nephews and nieces, Jeff (Meg) Oberholtzer, Daniel (Rachel) Oberholtzer, Matt Gandrud, Jill Gandrud, Abby Pankow and Ethan Pankow; and numerous cousins. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Vencile; paternal grandparents, Charles and Hilma Elgie; and maternal grandparents, Myrtle and Kelly Stalwick. Celebrating the Life of Mike: Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, A Private Funeral Service by invitation will be held Saturday, December 12, 2020, at 11:00 am at First Lutheran Church in Minot. Those attending are required to wear masks and social distance. A Public Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2020, at 12:00 pm at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND. Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, please observe social distancing. Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the book on Friday from 4 to 7 pm at First Lutheran Church in Minot. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Minot State University Beaver Boosters or to Magic City Youth Baseball, 1940 S. Broadway #102, Minot, ND, 58701. The service will be livestreamed for the public to view and can be accessed by going to First Lutheran Church’s link at www.FirstLutheran.TV Thompson-Larson Funeral Home.
