A Vigil Prayer Service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Michael Drew Dorhout was born August 1, 1963, in Hawarden, Iowa, the youngest son of the late Harv and Shirley Dorhout. He attended West Sioux Elementary and High schools in Hawarden, graduating from high school in 1981.He attended Iowa State University and earned a degree in business and accounting in 1985. He worked for the Army, Air Force Exchange Service in Dallas and San Antonio, Texas, where he met and fell in love with Syboney. They were married on February 25, 1989. They welcomed their first son, Jared, on October 23, 1990 and moved to Hawarden a year later where Mike managed his family‘s business. FOR-Most, Inc. In the years that followed, he became president of his parents' company, and he and Syboney, celebrated the birth of another son, Dustin, on May 6, 1995. Mike was a respected businessman known for his integrity and pursuit of excellence. He was the youngest person elected to the Hawarden City Council and served for four years. He was on the board of directors for Farmer's State Bank and volunteered his time on the finance committee for St. Mary's, Hawarden, Church Council. Because of his desire for a Catholic education for his children, Mike moved his family to Jefferson, South Dakota, in the summer of 2003 and commuted to his office in Hawarden. Mike and Syboney joined Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City, Iowa, and Jared and Dustin attended Sacred Heart School. They found themselves immersed in a rich environment of nurturing friendships and excellent education. In November, 2004, Mike was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He recovered from surgery and fought bravely to lead a productive life as a loving husband and father and a faith-filled person. As in other aspects of his life, he was successful at this, and he and Syboney and the boys continued to accumulate wonderful memories while cementing a bond that would last to eternity. Mike's most precious memories are of the times he spent with Syboney and their boys. He especially loved their cabin on the Lewis and Clark Lake in Yankton, South Dakota, and the fun they had boating and fishing. He was generous in opening his lake home to family and friends so they could share in the happiness he so treasured. He loved to travel; some of the family's more memorable vacations were a Disney Cruise and a trip to New Zealand. Mike and his family treasured the gift of time, sunshine and vitality on their recent trip to South Padre Island. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Syboney and their precious children, Jared and Dustin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harv and Shirley Dorhout. Also surviving are his two sisters, Inez Summy and her husband Kelly of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Dana Woolworth of Grimes, Iowa; a brother, Brian Dorhout of Dallas, Texas and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Mike's earthly presences will be terribly missed; his memory remains an example of faith-driven courage and a man's dedicated love to his wife and children. The family prefers memorials be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the school or the West Sioux Educational Foundation.
