Ray Hayes, at 10 o'clock this morning, in this city, a victim of a rifle ball fired, it is believed by the officers, by his own hand. A rifle lay by the side of the body and a bullet-hole between his eyes showed the manner in which death had come to the venerable settler. It is believed he sat on the edge of the bed and fired the fatal shot. Despondency due to impaired health is believed to have led to the tragedy. Michael White had made this county his home for more than fifty years. He was a member of the Settlers' League, which figured in the famous Mussel slough tragedy in 1880. He had been visiting a daughter near Visalia for some weeks and only returned to this city last night, resuming his residence at the home of Captain and Mrs. Hayes. The latter were away this morning when the tragedy occurred and the body was discovered upon their return home. The deceased was 80 years old and leaves four daughters. In his earlier life he was a great lover of horse racing and owned several horses which won fame on American tracks.
