Description	:	According to his military pension papers, Michael Felthauser served with Company K, 1st Nebraska Cavalry. He also served with Company F, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry under Captain Dominic Laboo. In September 1863 Michael was at the Battle of Whitestone Hill against the Sioux Indians in Dakota Territory much of which was apparently fought under the cover of darkness. The 2nd Nebraska Cavalry was then mustered out December 1863 and he re-enlisted in the 1st Nebraska Veteran Volunteer Cavalry. During the Civil War, Michael was injured in the skirmish of Grand Prairie on August 24, 1864 at Jones' Hay Station located between Devalls Bluff and Little Rock, Arkansas. He was thrown from his horse and fractured his right knee cap with the butt of a musket. He also sustained injury to his right groin. Although his obituary states that he was held at Andersonville Prison located in Georgia, no documentation has been found to substantiate that claim. It is possible but also not substantiated by his records that he may have been taken prisoner at Jones' Hay Station and exchanged for Confederate soldiers near St Louis, Missouri. During his lifetime he was an active member of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) William Baumer Post No. 24 in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Article summary: The skirmish at Grand Prairie had no material effect upon the course of the war, nor did it advance the careers of any of its participants. It rates only a few pages in the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion. Nevertheless, this minor skirmish in far off Arkansas is justly remembered as part of Nebraska's Civil War history. In no other instance were so many Nebraska troops captured by the enemy. While casualties in the skirmish itself were minimal, few if any of Nebraska's Civil War soldiers suffered more hardship, fear, and frustration than did Lt.
