Description	:	Michael Francis Flannegan, son of John Vincent and Mary “Irene” (Doty) Flannegan, was born April 29, 1943 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He began his education at St. Ellen’s Catholic School and continued at Emmetsburg Community School. Read More	Michael Francis Flannegan, son of John Vincent and Mary “Irene” (Doty) Flannegan, was born April 29, 1943 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He began his education at St. Ellen’s Catholic School and continued at Emmetsburg Community School. At the age of seventeen Mike started his own tree service during which time he worked to save local Elm trees from Dutch Elm disease. On November 30, 1963, Mike was united in marriage to Marietta Chapman. Mike then joined forces with his father and brother in the excavation business for a short time before pursuing this independently for the next 20 years, while subsequently supporting Marietta’s efforts with 2M’s Floral and Garden Center. He and Marietta owned and operated the floral/garden shop for 18 years, and Mike would often shut down his excavation business to assist his wife by making floral arrangements for funerals. Mike also had several side endeavors that occupied his “spare” time during these years - including Emmetsburg Sand & Gravel, the Palo Alto County Gazette, and Aspen Campground. The early 1980’s were a challenging time for many in the area with the farm crisis taking a toll and Mike found himself starting over with new employment opportunities. Mike next spent time in Loveland, Colorado excavating commercial land developments, but family brought him back to Iowa and he joined Durnell Engineering for a time and eventually served in Adair County as Superintendent of Secondary Roads. It was during this time that his entrepreneurial spirit kicked in again, and the idea of a specialized mobile sign truck concept was born. In 1987 he began his manufacturing business and launched Flannegan Western. For the next 32 years he enjoyed building custom sign trucks for departments of transportation nation wide. Mike loved his work and had a passionate and creative nature that kept him fully occupied until the week before his death. Mike also appreciated the arts and this surfaced with his design of various sculptures including a wooden Indian carved as a family project from a walnut tree, which had grown at his childhood home, and a large steel structure named “The Family”, that stood at the entrance of his business. He also envisioned creating a school that would teach various arts and trades locally in the “Little Red School” and pursued this concept as he could. He looked forward to every minute he could spend with Marietta, Rhonda, his grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Mike was a founding member of the Palo Alto Economic Development Group...and participated in hiring Emmetsburg’s first Economic Development Director. Mike always wished to preserve Emmetsburg’s way of life for future generations. Michael passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at his home in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Irene Flannegan; a brother, Hugh Flannegan; a sister, Patricia Reding; and two nephews, Steven and Bob Flannegan. He is survived by his wife, Marietta Flannegan of Emmetsburg, Iowa; his daughter, Rhonda Flannegan Kliegl of Glen Falls, New York; his three grandchildren, Tyler, Ryan, and Natalie Kliegl; a sister, Mary Vorlicek of North Carolina; nieces and nephews, Patrick, Sue, Tom, Jim, Lisa, John, Michael, Paul, Kate, Liz, and Adam; as well as many other relatives and friends.
