Contributor: Julia Kinsey (48922386) • [email protected] Big Timber Pioneer, May 12, 1927 Michael Henry Whalen Early Pioneer, Died Saturday Morning Michael Henry Whalen, who had been in poor health for a month, passed suddenly at his home on the west side Saturday morning of heart disease. Sometime during the night, he left the house, unknown to the rest of the family, and when his son, Henry returned from night work about 4 a.m., he found the body of his father lying between the house and a shed. A physician who was summoned stated that death had occurred at least an hour before, Funeral service was held at St. Joseph's church Monday forenoon by Rev Fr. Dret of Columbus. Interment being in Mountain View. Many old friends from the country were here and the attendance of sympathizing friends from the city was unusually large. In addition to the regular service, Mrs. Signa Bailey, with A. J Bryant at the organ sang "Thy Will Be Done"; and Crossing The Bar." Pallbearers were G. A.Loasby, J.J. Gallagher, John Tobin, Ben Mjelde, B. McAdams of this city and John Hoff of Billings. Michael Henry Whalen was born in Iowa City Iowa, on February 27, 1858, his parents being Timothy Whalen and Margaret Maloney Whalen. His boyhood days were spent on the farm of his parents. At the age of 24, he came to Montana, working on the construction work of the Northern Pacific Railway Co., which was terminated at Mies City. In the fall of 1882, he came to what is now Sweet Grass county, working first for John and George W. Cook near Melville. Later he went to the Ameican Fork, entering the employ of Veasy & McDonnell prominent stockmen. In the early nineties, he located on a homestead four miles east of Melville where he was joined by a brother William Whalen the latter also using his homestead right. The Whalen brothers then purchased the section lying between their homestead which made an excellent ranch, There Michael remained until 1900 when he removed to Big Timber. That year he was united in marriage to Miss Nora O'Toole. To this union five children were born Henry J, Mary E., Frances A., Charles E., and Albert M., all of whom, with the mother, were with him at the time of death. During his residence in this city, Mt Whalen had engaged in teaming, and was always a hard-working industrious and honest man. His friends were numerous throughout the city, and his loyalty to all was unquestioned.
