He emigrated to America in 1852, living three years in Pennsylvania. He then went to Franklin County, Wis., where he lived about three years. He was there married in 1857, to Miss Rosa Adelman, who was born in Germany in 1827, and came to America in 1853. They have three children--George, Henry and Lizzie. In 1859, he came to Nebraska, locating near the present site of Nickerson, and living there eleven years. At the end of that time, he moved to his present residence. He has a large farm of 400 acres, 150 acres in cultivation, the rest grass and timber land. He is largely interested in live-stock, having nearly one hundred head of cattle besides stock of other kinds. When he arrived in the county, he had only 15 cents and a yoke of oxen, the wagon he was using belonging to a young man who came with him. He arrived at the time of the Pawnee war, and was summoned to pursue the Indians. The owner of the wagon then, becoming frightened, obtained another team, and, taking the wagon, turned back and left Mr. Herman and his family on the prairie, without shelter or conveyance. He managed to reach his destination, enduring many privations during that and succeeding years. Now he is one of Dodge County's most opulent and respected farmers. ``````` Fremont Daily Herald, September 8, 1908, p. 1, col. 4 DODGE COUNTY PIONEER DIES Michael Herman of Nickerson Passes Away at the Age of 84 Years ___ When Michael Herman died Sunday morning at 9 o'clock, one of the oldest residents of Dodge county passed into the dim unknown. Death came to him as a result of old age, after an illness of several months. Mr. Herman was born in Germany October 13, 1824. As a young man he came to America, and after living for some time in the eastern states moved to Nebraska in 1859. He settled on a farm where now stands the town of Nickerson, and as the town grew up around him he became one of its leading citizens, remaining so until his death. Always thrifty and ever ready to lend a helping hand to the needy, little wonder it is that he could count his friends and acquaintances by the hundreds. He was a member of the Lutheran church and for over forty years held the position of treasurer of the school board of Nickerson. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in Nickerson, the remains being brought to this city for burial. ``````` September 9, 1908, p. 5, col. 1 & 2 FUNERAL OF MR. HERMON All Schools and Business Houses of Nickerson Close for Services ___ Yesterday afternoon at the Methodist church in Nickerson the last rites were performed over the remains of the Dodge county pioneer, Michael Hermon. The church in which the funeral was held was filled with a mass of beautiful and fragrant flowers. Rev. Wetherall officiated at the services and delivered a beautiful sermon, speaking about the pioneer life and the drifting away of the pioneers, among the oldest of whom was Mr. Hermon. In honor of the dead pioneer all the business houses and schools in Nickerson were closed during the services. The teachers and pupils all attended in a body. Scores of people from all over the country were present. Those who went from Fremont were: Mr. and Mrs. Sexton, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Healey, Mrs. J. T. Hairhouse, Mrs. Milan Cook, Mrs. O. F. Turner, Mrs. John Pfeiffer, A. B. Thomas, John Hauser, and Mr. Davis. The remains of the deceased were brought to this city and interred in Ridge cemetery.
