Description	:	Michael J. Schmidt, 83, of St. Paul died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at Seward Memorial Hospital in Seward. He was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Spalding to Robert and Frances (Polansky) Schmidt. On Nov. 30, 1946, he married Marjorie Fairbairn in St. Paul. She died June 27, 2007. Survivors include his son, Robert "Bob" of Buckeye, Ariz.; daughters, Judith "Judy" Schwartz of North Platte and Elizabeth "Betty" Dittmar of Utica; brother, Leonard of Rawlins, Wyo.; sister, Roberta Spilinek of McCook; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. On Nov. 30, 1946, he married Marjorie Fairbairn in St. Paul. She died June 27, 2007. Survivors include his son, Robert "Bob" of Buckeye, Ariz.; daughters, Judith "Judy" Schwartz of North Platte and Elizabeth "Betty" Dittmar of Utica; brother, Leonard of Rawlins, Wyo.; sister, Roberta Spilinek of McCook; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was raised in Spalding and St. Paul. He graduated from St. Paul High School in 1943. After his graduation, Mike entered the U.S. Navy on Nov. 4, 1943. He served as a Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class. During his service, he received the American Area Ribbon, Victory Medal, 1 Star in Asiatic-Pacific, Navy Unit Commendation, 5th Amphibious Corps for outstanding heroism during the seizure of Iwo Jima from Feb. 19-28, 1945. Mike received his honorable discharge on June 1, 1946. Mike and Marjorie first lived in Omaha for five years. They farmed for 10 years in the Ansley and St. Paul areas before moving into St. Paul. After farming, Mike worked for Clayton Peterson Chevrolet, the Texaco Station in St. Paul, and the Nebraska Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island. He later worked construction and then owned Mike's Texaco in St. Paul. After semi retiring, he worked at Jack and Jill in St. Paul. After retirement, he liked to pick, clean and crack black walnuts, make homemade ice cream, do woodworking and gardening. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and a 63 year member of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119, both of St. Paul. At the American Legion he was very active, serving on the funeral military honor guard, taking tickets at the American Legion baseball games and many other activities. He was also a member of the VFW 1347 of Grand Island. He was also preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Mary Josephine; sisters and brothers-in-law, Angela and Leonard Arehart and Roselia and Lester Arehart; sister-in-law, Delores McClellan and two brothers-in-law, Carl Henningsen and Gerald Spilinek.
