He was born in Philadelphia to John Joseph and Anna (Gavel) Kormanski. Mike served proudly during World War II in England, France, Belgium, Germany and Scotland as a U.S. Army captain in the 622nd Ordnance Battalion. He met his future wife, Army nurse Marianna (Mim) Gillelan, while both were stationed near Paris in 1945. A year later, the couple was married at Elias Lutheran Church in Emmitsburg, MD, and settled in Gettysburg. After earning a degree in physics from Gettysburg College, Mike accepted a position with IBM in New York City, and began his 36-year career with the company. Mike worked on the Mechanical Design Team at Watson Lab, IBM's first research facility, a joint venture with Columbia University. He was awarded several patents for the NORC, the Naval Ordnance Research Calculator, the first super computer and the world's most powerful computer from 1954 to 1963. While living in Pearl River, the father of three daughters was active in the Elks Club, the Masonic Lodge, the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the Kosciusko Lodge of New York City. Retiring to West Hills, CA, Mike directed the speakers' bureau of the Northridge Rotary Club, presided over The Retired Officers Association of San Fernando Valley and traveled extensively throughout Europe. Upon his return to the East Coast, he settled in Hummelstown, where he became an active member of Derry Presbyterian Church and the Hershey Rotary Club. He is survived by daughters Christina Kormanski Krause of McLean, VA, Patricia Gillelan Kormanski Brewster of Dallas, TX, and Amy Louise Kormanski of Framingham, MA; son-in-law Paul Dennis Krause; grandchildren Lindsay Beam Krause Blackwood, Megan Gillelan Krause and Jonathan Hundley Brewster; great-granddaughter Eleanor Beam Blackwood; five nieces and six nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Marianna, who died in 1982. Funeral services will be held March 22, at 11 a.m. at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg, with his nephew, Fr. Robert Gillelan, officiating. Mike will be interred alongside his wife at the Mountain View Cemetery in Emmitsburg, MD with full military honors presented by The Adams County Allied Veterans Association.
