Ireland, was the 6th of 8 sons of Archibald McKinley and Ann "Nancy" Morrison. In 1851, brothers, John and James, and in 1862, Archie, Nancy and William emigrated to the U.S. They went first to Meriden, New Haven Co., CT where some of the brothers worked for Parker Bros. Iron Foundry. John, James and Archie, Jr. traveled west to CA for gold in the 1860s, with Archie settling there. By 1870, John and James bought adjoining farms in Grand Meadow Township. Clayton Co., IA. Archie, Sr. and Nancy came to live with John. Michael married Mary J. Gleason, daughter of William Gleason and Judith (Drennan) Gleason of Laois (Queen's Co.). Mary J., b Laois (Queen's Co) 1847, d Idaho Springs, Clear Creek Co., CO, 1887. Born of this union were 5 daughters and 1 son: Nancy "Anna" Morrison: in 1898, she became the 1st switchboard operator in Idaho Springs); md Will Woodward in 1900, son of James Francis and MaryAnn Brennan Woodward. Mary Harriet "Hattie", b 1874, Georgetown; graduated from Colorado State College of Education and taught in the Idaho Springs schools 2 years before her marriage in 1899 to Wm Llewellyn "Lou" Shaffer, son of Sedwick Drake and Margaret (Morrison) Shaffer. P. 446, (History of Clear Creek Co, 1986 version, p. 399. Their son Philip Shaffer died in 1888 of diptheria which took his aunt Emma, who lived in the home. Julia Ann, b 1875; school teacher; md. Ralph Denio, son of James Wilbur Denio and Hattie Mariah Taylor, on 29 August 1900. Lived in Sheridan WY Philip Archibald, b 1879- 1888 Emma Gertrude: 1881-1888, died at age 7 within a month of Philip's death. Katherine M. "Kate", b 1886- 25 Mar 1906, died at the age of 20 during a diptheria epidemic. A Sophomore student of the University of Colorado, she had been residing with Shaffers. Mary's sister-in-law, Mary Teresa Gleason, b Mar 1842, a widow of one of Mary McKinley's brothers, was a housekeeper living in Iowa when she began caring for the 4 orphaned McKinley girls. Affectionately known as Auntie Gleason, who took them in and put them through school by running a restaurant in the Wilkens building in Idaho Springs at 1625 Miner Street. ========================================= DIED-In this town, on Tuesday, Oct 25 Michael J. McKinley, aged 45 years. Mr. McKinley has been a resident of Clear Creek and Gilpin counties, almost since the inception of the territory which now forms the state of Colorado. He contributed much towards building up our mountain homes, and his work will for more than a generation be a monument to his memory. For years he has been a sufferer of consumption, yet through it all he has been a patient toiler, always looking and caring for his wife and little ones first, and contributing much of his accumulations to charitable purposes. But few names could have been stricken from the list of business houses of Idaho Springs that would cause more regret than the name of Mr. J. M. McKinley. The funeral occurred on Thursday last, and was largely attended. He died and was buried in the Catholic faith, although but a short time previous to his death, and when it transpired he was an honored member of the Knights of St Pythias. In this connection let it be said that all care known that loved and skilled hands could show, both from the K of P order, the Catholic Church, and citizens, was cheerfully and without request tendered him. To the bereaved wife and the blessed children of the deceased, the Gazette extends its most heartfelt condolence and sympathy. ======================================== family notes: 1880 Census: Mary age 33, keeping house, Michael age 38, saloon keeper, Idaho Springs, Clear Creek Co., Co, with children Mary Harriet (Hattie) age 6 at school, Julia Anna age 5, Nancy (Anna Morrison) age 3, and Philip Archibald age 1, with Maria Larkin, servant. McKinley and Patrick Morris issued claim 31 March 1883, Little Mae Lode, 3.56 acres, Fairplay Land Office, Clear Creek Co, Co. 1885 Colorado Census: Michael 43, Mary 38, Hattie age 11, Julia age 9, Anna age 8, Philip age 6 and Gertrude (Emma Gertrude) age 3. Bef 1900 Census: Michael (died 1887 age 45 miner's consumption), Mary (died 1890 age 43 "incurable disease") and Philip (died 1888 age 9) are dead. =============================== In Sept, 1905, Michael's older brother Alexander (b 1837) and his wife Rebecca Clark visited nieces Hattie, Anna and Kate. ..... "visited the Springs, the Natatorium and drank the mineral water. Kate left for Boulder where she is attending the University, 2nd year ( Kate would die within months 25 Mar 1906 at age 20 during diphtheria epidemic). Your Pa, Lou Shaffer and little Phillip (Hattie's little boy) (he would die 2 years later at the age of 7) went with her to the depot. Pa then walked up Chicago Canyon to the cemetery and visited your Uncle Michael's grave, also your Aunt Mary's, Cousin Phil and Gertrude......".
