Visitation for Michael will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2015, from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Lone Tree American Legion. Memorials may be directed to St. Jude's Hospital in Michael's name. Online condolences for the Michaels family may be sent to www.lewisfuneralhomes.com. Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services is taking care of Michael's family. He was born on February 16, 1945, to Harley Hobert and Mary Jane (Hanft) Kirkpatrick, of rural Nichols, IA. He attended country school, then public school in Nichols, and graduated from Lone Tree High School. After graduation and a season of working on the family farm, he joined the United States Marine Corps on Nov. 2, 1965, serving three tours in Vietnam before being honorably discharged July 5, 1971. Upon his return, he rejoined his family in farming and trucking, eventually leaving farming to work for Monsanto for 24 years. Upon early retirement, he continued working for various employers until his illness from glioblastoma forced him to stay home. Mike enjoyed family travel and activities with friends. Mike had three children, Dianna, Stacy and Brian. He met the love of his life, Myrna Stiff, of West Liberty, and they married Sept. 24, 1988. In subsequent years, the family grew to include spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren as follows: Dianna and Douglas Zaruba, his daughter, Jessica and her husband, Austin Bixby, and their children Emma and Evey; and Dianna and Doug's children, Shane and Kyle; Stacy and Jarrod McMichael and their children, Marissa and Brenden; and Brian and his sons, Kayden and Camryn. Mike was preceded in death by his parents. Left to cherish his memory are his brothers Kenneth (Jana), James (Terri) and William (Krista) and their families, and many other relatives and friends.
