He was born August 26, 1948, in Crow Agency, Montana, a son of Henry and Elizabeth Gun Shows Bull Chief Sr. He was a descendent of Bird Horse, Wraps his Tail and Chief Sits Down Spotted. He grew up in St. Xavier and in the Fort Smith area. Michael was affectionately known by family and friends as "Lionel". His Crow Name is "Ishdaxxiish" meaning "His Bows and Arrow", given to him by grandfather Bird Horse. He was a member of the Ties the Bundle and a child of the Greasy Mouth Clan. He was faithful member of The House of Prayer Church in Crow Agency, where his brother, JD Bull Chief, currently pastors. Lionel attended grade school at St. Xavier Public school. Later he attended and graduated from high school at Flandreau Indian High School in Flandreau, South Dakota. After High School, Lionel attended and graduated from Eastern Montana College in Billings, Montana and earned a degree in business accounting. Lionel was a man of many skills and talents. He was a skillful carpenter, a Crow Tribal Police officer, an accountant, a truck driver who drove throughout the United States, worked as a maintenance man at the Utah Jazz arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. He also was a cook and game warden for the Crow Tribal Game Wardens, and a coal miner at Sarpy Coal Mine. He was an avid Hardin Bulldog fan and didn't want to miss any games. Lionel met and married Maudine Stewart of Crow Agency and through this union they have four wonderful children. Later in life, Lionel met and married Mary Rogers of Black Lodge District, where he attended a camp meeting at Black Lodge Church. There he surrenders his heart to Jesus. Afterwards, he made it his passion and goal in his heart for all his family members to come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. He traveled throughout Canada and the United States, along with other ministers, to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Though he struggled at times with his walk with the Lord, he always returned to God. He always supported his family with all their family functions and get togethers. He had a heart for ministry as well as supporting his brothers, Pastor JD and Duane, in ministry. When we would see him, he always had a smile on his face and he would just be so happy to have family around. He was also an amazing cook. There were many times when he would call and have family to come over to eat or he would take us out to eat. He always made sure we had more than enough. He sure did love family. He was a kind-hearted man and he would always call us and check in. We are definitely going to miss him. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Henry Bull Chief Jr., Rollen Bull Chief, Harry Musky Bull Chief and Irving Afraid of Bear Sr, his daughter Cindy Bull Chief, his sisters Romona La Rance and Doreen Afraid of Bear. He is survived by his adopted parents, Freddy & Phyllis Bull Calf of Browning, Montana. His children, Polly (RC) Old Coyote, Cecelia Bull Chief, Michael (Brandy) Bull Chief Jr. Grandkids: Marie Rose (Allen) Hunts the Arrow, Randall Jefferson, Robert (Nichole) Old Coyote, Evander Old Coyote, Ryan Pedro Asencio, Nathan Asencio, Princess Asencio, Barbra Bull Chief, Joanita Whiteman, Matiles, Billy, Blyne, Bernadett, Mylah, Dj(Shandoe) Tillman, Charity (Darius) Rides the Horse, Great-Grandkids: Heavenly, Calal, Gemma, Baby Allen, Nala, Nova, Isabella, Asriel Kei, Jace, Kyri, Maya, Mika, Milani, Isaiah. His sisters: Carol (Patrick) Alden Sr., Marlene Walking Bear, Debbie Pretty Paint, Pamela (Oscar) Nanamkin, Dorothy Mandan, Warlene Comes Up.
