He emigrated to LaSalle county, Illinois, in 1864, when he was 22 years of age and in 1871 he was united in marriage to Miss Catharine Hengen who still survives him. Read More	Audubon County Journal Exira, Iowa September 10, 1903 Page 6 Michael Metz was born in the village of Heidenbach, Germany, September 9, 1842, and died in Exira, Iowa, September 3, 1903, aged 60 years, 11 months, 24 days. He emigrated to LaSalle county, Illinois, in 1864, when he was 22 years of age and in 1871 he was united in marriage to Miss Catharine Hengen who still survives him. In 1885 they removed to Benton township, Cass county, Iowa, where they continued to reside on a large farm which belonged to him at his demise. In order to be near the church and to give his children better facilities for getting a better education than the rural schools give he purchased a fine residence on North Jefferson street in this city last spring and removed here where he resided at the time of his death. To this union were born fifteen children, five dying in infancy, ten still surviving, viz: John P., Mathias, Nicklos, Michael, jr., Mary A., Babara, now Mrs. W. T. Bintner, Moritz, Catharine, Lena, and Rose. He was a devoted Catholic and as such received the last sacrament at the hands of the minister then officiating at the "Holy Trinity" church, Rev. Father Heirbst. Mr. Metz was well known to a large circle of friends and acquaintances who all speak in glowing terms as to his honest, upright dealings with all with whom he had business transactions, and in the few months of his sojourn among us, these qualities were frequently brought forward and always to his credit. He was a kind, indulgent husband and father, always ready and watchful for the interests of those under his protection and care, and all were present and received the last parting blessing before the spirit was wafted away to Him who gave it. The funeral was held from "Holy Trinity" church in this city conducted by Rev. Father Failenschmid whose sermon was appropriate to the occasion after which the remains were taken to the Wiota Catholic cemetery followed by a large concourse of mourning relatives and sympathizing friends, when all that was mortal of our late friend and fellow citizen were deposited in the tomb there to remain until those gladsome words shall be heard "Well done thou good and faithful servant."
